A 12-year-old girl from Hull is expected to spend at least six months in hospital after being struck by a car on her way to school, her family has revealed.
A Life-Changing Morning in Hull
The incident occurred on November 13 as Layla Redfern was walking to school. She was hit by a silver Mercedes E220 convertible. Emergency services airlifted the critically injured girl to a specialist hospital in Sheffield.
Her uncle, Michael Redfern, explained that Layla was placed in a coma for two weeks following the collision. She has since undergone multiple surgeries for a severe brain injury. To relieve pressure on her brain, doctors had to remove a section of her skull.
A Long and Difficult Road to Recovery
The family's ordeal is far from over. Michael shared that Layla still cannot speak, sit, or eat independently, receiving all nutrition and fluids through tubes. Her condition requires constant medical attention, and she faces further operations in the coming weeks and months.
"We are going to take each day as it comes," Michael told Hull Live. "It's just a waiting game and seeing what the outcome will be." The traumatic experience has placed immense stress on the family, including Layla's mother Sarah and grandmother Anita, who have been at her bedside constantly.
Community Support Through Fundraiser
With a lengthy hospital stay ahead, the family has launched a GoFundMe page to help cover mounting costs. The funds will assist with travel, food, and accommodation in Sheffield for family members who do not drive, especially when they can no longer stay at the hospital facility.
Money raised will also contribute to future home adaptations needed for when Layla is eventually discharged. The appeal has already garnered significant support, raising over £2,400 from public donations.
In connection with the accident, Humberside Police confirmed a 26-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
