Gen Z Driving Anxiety Crisis: Survey Reveals Terrified Young Drivers
Driving is an everyday activity that many perform without a second thought, but a startling new survey has uncovered a hidden epidemic of fear among Generation Z motorists. Research conducted by insurance experts Tempcover reveals that common driving tasks are leaving young drivers absolutely petrified, with significant consequences for their daily lives and career prospects.
The Most Daunting Driving Tasks
Tempcover surveyed 2,000 young drivers about the motoring tasks they find most intimidating. The results paint a picture of a generation struggling with basic automotive responsibilities:
- Changing a flat tyre emerged as the biggest fear, terrifying 36% of respondents
- Jump-starting a car with a dead battery equally frightened 36% of young drivers
- Parallel parking caused anxiety for 24% of Gen Z motorists
Other basic tasks that filled young drivers with dread included checking tyre pressure at garages (22%), hill starts (22%), checking oil levels (20%), and even using car washes, which alarmed 12% of respondents.
The Extreme Measures of Anxious Drivers
The fear is so acute that nearly half (45%) of Gen Z drivers admitted they would rather drive further away and walk for ten minutes than attempt parallel parking. This avoidance behavior extends to major road networks too, with 18% reporting fear of driving on motorways and another 18% terrified of merging onto them.
Social media platforms like TikTok have become outlets for these driving phobias, with young motorists regularly sharing their anxieties. One user, @artemis_alexis, expressed the sudden panic that sets in when driving somewhere new with unknown parking situations. Another, @romillyjane, posted from her car venting about how people underestimate her driving anxiety, while @loulroberts admitted to avoiding motorways entirely, experiencing panic even when approaching roundabouts with motorway exits.
Career Consequences of Driving Fear
Beyond affecting daily mobility, this driving anxiety is having tangible impacts on Gen Z's employment opportunities. According to Tempcover's findings:
- More than one in ten young drivers have missed out on their dream job because they were too scared to drive to the interview or workplace
- 10% have turned down promotions that would require increased time on the road
Jake Lambert, an expert at Tempcover, warned: "The research exposes a hidden crisis on our roads where a generation of drivers, despite being legally qualified, are finding the reality of driving so overwhelming that it is potentially life-limiting. When motorists are turning down promotions or missing interviews because they are too anxious to drive to the location, this ceases to be just a motoring issue and becomes a broader societal one."
Lambert emphasized that "confidence comes with experience, but if drivers are avoiding the road, they never bridge that gap."
A Recognized Phobia with Solutions
According to Anxiety Care UK, driving phobia ranks among the most common fears in the United Kingdom. The charity explains that while some people experience mild nervousness behind the wheel, others suffer full-scale panic attacks that force them to abandon driving altogether.
Thankfully, there are proven methods to overcome driving anxiety. Anxiety Care UK recommends a "de-conditioning" approach, where individuals gradually train themselves to react correctly to driving situations that trigger fear. The process involves:
- Starting by simply sitting in the car with the engine running
- Progressing to driving short distances, parking, and walking back
- Driving around the block or taking slightly longer trips with a supportive companion
- Eventually attempting the same routes alone before building up to motorway driving
The charity advises that "the steps can be as large or as small as necessary, and big steps can be broken down into smaller ones. But each step should challenge the anxiety a little more than the last."
This comprehensive survey reveals not just individual anxieties but a generational challenge that extends beyond transportation to affect career development, social mobility, and mental wellbeing among young adults navigating today's roads.
