Reckless Motorist Sentenced for Wrong-Way M6 Toll Maneuver and High-Speed Chase
A motorist from Staffordshire has been jailed after driving the wrong way on the M6 Toll to avoid paying a £6.40 fee, followed by a dangerous police chase. Jordan Sneddon, 28, from Tamworth, was caught on CCTV reversing his black MG and performing a U-turn on the motorway near Burntwood in August last year.
Dangerous Driving and Police Pursuit
After evading the toll, Sneddon led officers on a high-speed pursuit through local roads. He reached speeds of 90mph in a 30mph zone, went through a red light, and collided with a roundabout. The chase ended on the A51 near Rugeley when his car sustained extensive damage, allowing police to arrest him.
Stafford Crown Court heard that Sneddon admitted to dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. On Monday, he was sentenced to one year and two months in prison, banned from driving for two years and seven months, and received a conviction for his actions.
Police Response and Public Safety Concerns
PC Mark Boyles of Staffordshire Police commented on the case, stating, "Sneddon’s driving was incredibly reckless and could have easily resulted in someone being seriously or fatally injured. I’m pleased that we were able to resolve this incident safely and prevent potential injury to both Sneddon and other road users."
The incident highlights the risks of such behavior on busy motorways, where wrong-way driving can lead to catastrophic accidents. Staffordshire Police's road crime team played a key role in tracking and apprehending Sneddon after he failed to stop on Pool Lane.
Similar Incidents and Broader Context
This case follows other dangerous driving incidents, such as one in Greater Manchester where police rammed a driver going the wrong way on the M60. In that instance, an ANPR camera alerted authorities to a possible cloned or stolen vehicle, leading to a chase that ended with three suspects detained.
Such events underscore ongoing challenges in policing motorway safety and the severe consequences of reckless driving. Authorities continue to use technology like CCTV and ANPR systems to monitor and respond to illegal activities on roads.
The sentencing serves as a stern warning to motorists about the legal and personal risks of evading tolls and engaging in dangerous driving, with potential outcomes including imprisonment and lengthy driving bans.
