Driver jailed after 100mph M56 chase ends in Audi flip

A man has been jailed after leading police on a 100mph motorway chase that ended when his Audi flipped over on a roundabout. Hai Nguyen, 40, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 12 months in prison and disqualified from driving for two years and three months at Chester Crown Court after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

Chase started on M6 after insurance flag

On Wednesday 20 July 2026, at 11.30pm, officers displayed a 'follow me' message in their police vehicle after a black Audi A6 S-Line was flagged as having no insurance on the M6 northbound in Cheshire. The driver failed to comply with requests to follow officers into Knutsford Services and then to leave the motorway at junction 19.

Officers activated their emergency equipment, and the driver sped up to around 100mph, continuing onto the M56 westbound where he drove along the hard shoulder.

Crash and arrest

The vehicle exited the motorway at junction 10 of the M56 and lost control at the roundabout, flipping and rolling over before landing the right way up. Nguyen, the sole occupant, attempted to climb out of the driver's window before being detained by officers.

Cheshire Police spokesperson PC Payne said: "Nguyen’s driving was incredibly dangerous and put other members of the public at risk. Thankfully, the roads were quiet at that time of the night, and no other motorists were injured when he lost control of his vehicle. Despite the serious collision, he still tried to climb out of the car window before being detained by our officers."

PC Payne added: "Let this be a reminder that the rules of the road are in place for a reason and you will be caught and held accountable if you choose to ignore them."
