Dad, 33, dies after Christmas Eve crash on Merseyside

A family is in mourning after a loving father died from injuries sustained in a devastating road collision on Christmas Eve.

Tragic Loss of a Devoted Father

Stephen Jones, aged 33, was involved in a serious crash on the evening of December 24th. He was taken to hospital with significant injuries but sadly passed away on January 3rd.

In a heartfelt tribute, his family remembered him as a "loving son, brother, partner, uncle but most importantly a dad," adding that his role as a father "meant the world to him."

They described Stephen as a lifelong Everton supporter and a passionate grassroots football coach who was "filled to his core with a passion to help people." His family stated: "His love for coaching children’s grassroot football meant he made a difference in so many lives."

Family's Injuries and Police Investigation

Stephen's partner, a 34-year-old woman, was also in the vehicle and remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Their eight-year-old son suffered minor injuries and is now being cared for by extended family.

Merseyside Police confirmed that a 32-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested at the scene. He has been released on bail with conditions while the investigation continues.

The suspect is under investigation for the offences of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

Appeal for Dashcam Footage

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy from the Serious Collision Investigation unit expressed his condolences, saying: "Our thoughts remain with Stephen’s family at this tragic time. We will continue to support them throughout this investigation."

He emphasised the importance of witness accounts, adding: "Eye witness accounts and dashcam are key to the investigation. I would urge anyone travelling in the area of the M57 or the East Lancashire Road, at around 8.30pm on Christmas Eve, to contact my team as soon as possible."
