Tributes are pouring in for a devoted Northumberland couple who lost their lives in a devastating collision on a major trunk road. Grandparents Christine and Stephen Routledge from Berwick were killed when their car was involved in a crash with a heavy goods vehicle.
A Tragic Morning on the A1
The fatal incident occurred on the A1 near Buckton at approximately 7.40am on Wednesday, January 14. According to police reports, an HGV travelling northbound collided with the couple's southbound Skoda and another vehicle, an Audi.
Emergency services rushed to the scene. Sadly, 64-year-old Stephen Routledge was pronounced dead at the location. His wife, 66-year-old Christine Routledge, was transported to hospital with serious injuries but later succumbed to them. The couple's beloved dog, Bear, who was travelling with them, also died from his injuries.
Investigation and Arrest Following the Collision
The drivers of both the HGV and the Audi were taken to hospital for treatment and have since been discharged. Northumbria Police confirmed that a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation as enquiries continue.
Sergeant Dave Roberts of Northumbria Police stated: "Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Mr and Mrs Routledge at this devastating time. We continue to offer them any support we can." He appealed for any further witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward to help establish the full circumstances.
A Family's Heartbreaking Tribute
The Routledge family issued an emotional statement, remembering Christine and Stephen as the cornerstone of their lives. They described them as "loving, generous, and deeply devoted" parents and grandparents to their ten grandchildren.
"They were the foundation of our lives – always offering support, guidance, and unconditional love," the family said. "Their sudden passing in a car accident with their dog Bear, who they loved very much, has left a profound emptiness that words cannot fully express."
The family added that they are comforted by the belief that the couple are together, and they requested privacy as they grieve.
The investigation into the precise causes of the fatal car crash on the A1 remains active, with police working to provide the bereaved family with definitive answers.
