A1 Felton crash: One person taken to hospital after collision

A crash on the A1 in Northumberland on Tuesday evening saw one person taken to hospital. The incident occurred between Swarland and Felton, prompting the road to be closed for around an hour.

Emergency response and hospital transfer

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that one person was taken to hospital in Cramlington. The service was called shortly after 4.20pm.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A1 near Felton, Northumberland shortly after 4.20pm on 27 October. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and a clinical team leader. One patient was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital."

Context of recent incidents and calls for action

The crash appears to have occurred in a similar area to a previous incident little over a week ago, which saw 22-year-old Erin Bennett killed. This comes amid widespread pressure for improvements to be made to the A1 in Northumberland.

ChronicleLive reported earlier this week on dashcam footage shared by a driver which showed a "string of near-misses", while there have been a number of serious crashes on the A1 in the county this year and eight people killed since the start of 2026.

Campaign and government response

The Chronicle and Journal have launched a new campaign to dual the A1 after the tragedies on the road this year. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has asked ministers and officials to explore "alternative ways" of funding the A1 dualling scheme.

Since a scheme to dual 13 miles of the route between Morpeth and Ellingham was scrapped in 2024, the Government has committed to carrying out junction improvements on known accident blackspots. A scheme has been announced for the Guyzance junction, with a focus on safety improvements on the southbound carriageway.
