A 93-year-old man has died following a serious road traffic collision in County Down, Northern Ireland, prompting a police appeal for witnesses.

Details of the fatal collision

The incident occurred on the Newry Road in Rathfriland on Saturday night. Police confirmed they were called to the scene shortly after 10.45pm on 20 December 2025.

The collision involved a silver Toyota Avensis and a pedestrian. Emergency services, including police officers, attended promptly, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the location.

Chief Inspector Simpson identified the victim as 93-year-old Patrick Joseph Brady, known as Patsy, from the Barnmeen area.

Police investigation and road closure

Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit are conducting enquiries into the circumstances of the fatal crash. The driver of the Toyota is not believed to have sustained serious injuries.

The Newry Road was closed overnight to allow for a thorough examination of the scene but has since reopened to traffic.

Appeal for witnesses and footage

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist their investigation. They are particularly keen to hear from:

  • Anyone who witnessed the collision.
  • Motorists with dashcam or other digital footage from the area around the time of the incident.

Chief Inspector Simpson stated: "We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have digital footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit."
