August Bank Holiday Traffic Chaos: RAC Predicts 14 Million Cars on UK Roads
14 million cars expected for August Bank Holiday

The August Bank Holiday weekend is set to bring gridlock to UK roads as the RAC predicts a staggering 14 million leisure trips by car. With families making the most of the last long weekend before autumn, major routes are expected to face severe congestion.

Peak Travel Times to Avoid

According to the RAC, the worst traffic is likely on:

  • Friday afternoon (25 August) as getaway traffic combines with commuters
  • Saturday morning (26 August) with day-trippers heading out
  • Bank Holiday Monday afternoon (28 August) as everyone returns home

Hotspot Areas

The M25, M5, M6 and coastal routes are expected to be particularly affected. Popular destinations like Cornwall, Devon and the Lake District will see significant traffic volumes.

Expert Advice

RAC Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis advises: "Our advice is to travel either early in the morning or much later in the evening if possible. Friday afternoon looks particularly busy."

With rail strikes also affecting travel plans, more people are expected to choose car travel, potentially worsening congestion.
