A woman on a family road trip in the Australian outback endured a harrowing three-hour ordeal after being trapped waist-deep in excrement when the floor of a long-drop toilet collapsed beneath her.
Incident Details
The incident took place at the Henbury Meteorites Conservation Zone, located 145 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs. The woman dropped nearly two metres into the waste pit after the toilet floor gave way. With no mobile phone signal available, her family was forced to drive an hour to the nearest town to seek help, leaving her alone in the pit.
Rescue Operation
A passing tradesman eventually came to her rescue. He dismantled part of the toilet structure, lowered a tow rope, and used his vehicle to pull her to safety. The woman sustained only minor cuts and was subsequently taken to hospital for observation.
NT WorkSafe has launched an investigation into the incident, classifying it as a 'dangerous incident'. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the collapse of the toilet facility at the remote conservation zone.
