Tributes have been paid to a 21-year-old woman found dead in a house in Batley after a tip-off from an armed robbery suspect. Courtney Angus was discovered at an address on Norfolk Street on Saturday evening.
Police were initially called to reports of an armed robbery at Asda in nearby Dewsbury at 9.20pm. A man arrested at the scene told officers about a woman he believed to be dead inside a house on Norfolk Street. When police attended the address, they found Courtney's body.
On Tuesday, West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a 37-year-old man from Batley remains in custody on suspicion of murder. Detective Chief Inspector Dan Bates said: 'This is clearly a very serious incident, where a young woman has lost her life.' He added that there is no wider risk to the public.
Courtney, described as one of three sisters, was remembered on Facebook as 'a beautiful girl with a beautiful soul'. The Fox & Hounds pub in Batley, where she had worked, paid tribute, saying staff were 'heartbroken to hear the devastating news'. A social media post said: 'Though she was only with us at The Fox for a short while, she left a lasting impression – sweet, kind, and always with a warm smile.'
Police are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV, doorbell or dash cam footage to come forward. A murder investigation is underway, and officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
