A new two-part documentary series, Murder Case: The Hunt for Arlene Fraser’s Killer, is set to air on BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer in February 2026. The series examines one of Scotland's most notorious unsolved mysteries: the disappearance of 33-year-old mother-of-two Arlene Fraser from Elgin in 1998.
On 28 April 1998, Arlene vanished without trace, leaving her two young children to return from school to an empty home. The case attracted intense media scrutiny and public suspicion, particularly after the troubled nature of her marriage to local businessman Nat Fraser came to light.
The documentary features interviews with detectives, journalists, and Arlene's family, including her sister Carol Gillies, who has campaigned for legal reforms to prevent killers from walking free while concealing victims' remains. The series explores the controversial investigation and the legal twists that followed.
David Harron, BBC Scotland's Commissioning Editor for Factual, said the series provides insight into police work and is made with care and sensitivity. Mick McAvoy, Executive Producer at Firecrest Films, noted that the case remains deeply rooted in the Scottish public consciousness.
The series is part of the award-winning Murder Case franchise, which saw its previous instalment, Murder Case: The Vanishing Cyclist, become the most-watched BBC Scotland commission of 2025 with two million viewers.
