A 30-year-old man has died after being tackled by a security guard who suspected him of shoplifting in Wiltshire. The incident occurred in the Shires car park in Trowbridge just after 3pm on Thursday, and the man, of no fixed address, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The security guard, aged 20, was working for Sainsbury's and employed by Mitie. He was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and has been released on police bail until May. Wiltshire Police said the man suffered a 'significant injury' when glass bottles he was carrying smashed during the tackle.
Detective Chief Inspector Jeremy Carter said: 'The man arrested is a security guard from a local store. He tackled the suspected shoplifter causing a number of glass bottles he was concealing to smash. This caused a significant injury to the man, who, despite the best efforts from paramedics, sadly died.'
Formal identification has yet to be carried out, with a post-mortem examination due to take place on Friday. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: 'We will support the police investigation in any way we can.' Mitie said: 'Our thoughts go out to family and friends at this sad time. We are supporting the police enquiry and it would not be appropriate to make any further comment at the moment.'
