A 19-year-old man who attempted to rob a Porsche using a fake gun has been sentenced to four years in prison. Fawaz Oyedeji, from Greenwich, London, posed as a buyer for a car listed online at £72,500 and arranged to meet the victim at their home in Southwark on Tuesday, March 18.
Attempted Robbery at Gunpoint
The victim showed Oyedeji around the Porsche Cayenne, a sports SUV, before both sat in the front seats to discuss the sale. Oyedeji then produced what appeared to be a firearm, pointed it at the victim, and demanded the keys. The victim fought back, and Oyedeji fled the scene on foot.
Police were called, and an investigation was launched. Detectives linked the phone used to arrange the viewing to Oyedeji, noting it had been in the area of both his home address and the scene of the attempted robbery. CCTV footage captured his movements before and after the offence, and officers recovered clothing matching what the suspect wore when arrested.
Arrest and Conviction
Oyedeji was arrested at his home in Leonard Robbins Path within 38 hours of the offence. Detective Constable Alex Long, who led the investigation, said: “The victim showed immense courage by refusing to hand over his keys despite being threatened with what appeared to be a genuine firearm. Thanks to his support throughout the investigation and the diligence of officers who gathered CCTV, digital and forensic evidence, we were able to build a compelling case that led to Oyedeji's conviction and sentence. Anyone buying or selling a vehicle privately should take sensible precautions. If something does not feel right, trust your instincts and leave. Always call 999 in an emergency. A jury at Inner London Crown Court unanimously found Oyedeji guilty after just 26 minutes of deliberation on Wednesday (November 4). He was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.
