A fatal collision between a train and a semi-truck occurred in eastern Iowa on Wednesday, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured, according to authorities.
Details of the Crash
The incident took place at a rural crossing where a state highway intersects with the Iowa Interstate Railroad, roughly 70 miles east of Des Moines. Poweshiek County Sheriff Matt Maschmann confirmed that one individual in the semi-truck died at the scene, while another was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
Derailment and Damage
The impact caused seventeen train cars and two power engines to derail, resulting in significant damage to the railroad infrastructure. Images from the scene depicted a large pile of railcars with smoke rising. Fortunately, Iowa State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Alex Dinkla stated that no hazardous materials were released.

Crews remain on site to clear the wreckage and repair the heavily damaged tracks and roadway. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
