A 15-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly stealing a maintenance van from Edinburgh Airport and taking it for a joyride. Police were called to the airport around 11:30 a.m. on June 25, 2025, following reports of a vehicle theft.
Van Fully Equipped with Radios
The stolen van was described as 'fully kitted out' for runway maintenance and repairs, equipped with two-way radios that communicate with air traffic control and security departments. According to a local resident who spoke to Edinburgh Live, the van is used by runway services engineering and contains critical communication equipment.
Police recovered the vehicle within the city after it was driven off-site. A 15-year-old male youth was arrested and charged in connection with the theft. He is due to appear in court at a later date.
Airport Security Protocols Activated
Edinburgh Airport confirmed that stringent safety protocols were immediately activated upon discovering the theft to protect operational systems. A spokesman stated, 'A vehicle was stolen and has since been recovered. We continue to assist Police Scotland with their enquiries.' The airport assured that there was no significant security risk at any point.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said, 'Around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, 25 June, 2026, officers received a report of the theft of a vehicle at Edinburgh Airport. A 15-year-old male youth was arrested and charged in connection and is due to appear at court at a later date.'
