A blue BMW burst into flames on the westbound carriageway of the M62 near to the Rocket junction on Wednesday morning, with emergency services called to the scene at around 8am. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service crews attended in two fire engines shortly before 8.10am, where they found the vehicle alight and smoke filling the sky.
Firefighters tackle blaze on hard shoulder
A firefighter wearing breathing apparatus began to put the fire out using a hose reel jet. Merseyside Police officers attended the scene to assist with a brief closure, according to the fire service, with fire crews extinguishing the fire by 8.34am before leaving the scene.
A video shared with the ECHO shows the flames roaring up from the body of the car, consuming the vehicle and filling the air with black smoke as commuters made their way into Liverpool.
Emergency services respond
In a statement, a spokesperson for the fire service said: "Fire crews were called to a fire on the westbound carriageway of the M62, near to the Rocket in Huyton this morning.
"Crews were on scene at 8.08am with two fire engines in attendance. Crews arrived to find one vehicle well alight. A firefighter wearing breathing apparatus rapidly began to put the fire out with a high pressure hose reel jet."
"Merseyside Police also attended and the westbound carriageway of the M62 was closed off. The fire was extinguished by 8.34am and crews left the scene in the hands of Merseyside Police."
A Merseyside Police spokesperson said earlier today: "We were called at 8am to a report of a vehicle on fire on the hard shoulder near to the Rocket junction, no injuries and vehicle is awaiting recovery."
