Shots were fired at the United States consulate in downtown Toronto on Tuesday morning, triggering an extensive police manhunt and a national security investigation. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m., when two suspects in a white Honda CRV unleashed multiple rounds at the heavily fortified building before fleeing the scene.
No Injuries Reported Despite Attack
Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo confirmed that although people were inside the consulate at the time of the shooting, the building's robust security measures prevented any injuries. "This building is highly secured and highly fortified, and there were no injuries," Barredo stated, emphasising the structural integrity of the diplomatic premises.
Potential Links to Global Turmoil and Sleeper Cells
Ontario Premier Doug Ford raised concerns that the attack could be connected to sleeper cells and international instability, particularly referencing the ongoing Iran war. However, police authorities cautioned that it is premature to establish a definitive motive for the shooting, urging the public to avoid speculation while the investigation proceeds.
Context of Recent Violence in Toronto
This assault follows a series of recent gunfire incidents at two synagogues in the Toronto area, heightening tensions in the region. Mayor Olivia Chow has strongly condemned antisemitic acts and noted that security has been significantly bolstered around consular buildings in response to these events.
The police investigation remains active, with efforts focused on identifying and apprehending the two suspects involved in the consulate attack. Authorities are analysing surveillance footage and forensic evidence to piece together the circumstances of the early morning assault.
