Violence erupts on Edgware Road after World Cup match
A police officer was taken to hospital with head injuries after being hit by a glass bottle during clashes between fans and law enforcement in London on Thursday night. The disorder broke out on Edgware Road after France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the World Cup quarter-finals, with goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in the second half.
Hundreds of people gathered on the street following the match, leading to unrest that saw objects thrown at Metropolitan Police officers. Social media footage captured the chaos, with bottles and fireworks being hurled as officers in riot gear formed a line across the road to restore order.
Four arrested and one officer injured
In a statement, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “One officer has been injured, and four people have been arrested following disorder in Edgware Road. Officers were initially called after a group of people congregated in the road and blocked traffic. The incident then escalated with the group throwing bottles and setting off fireworks. As a result, further officers were deployed to the area.”
The injured officer was taken to hospital for head injuries, believed to have been caused by a glass bottle. No other injuries were reported. The four arrests were made for violent disorder, and the group dispersed by around 01:00 hours, allowing the road to reopen.
Police vow to bring perpetrators to justice
The Met Police condemned the violence, stating: “We will not tolerate such disorder on our streets, or attacks on our officers. A police presence will remain in the area overnight and we will be reviewing CCTV and video footage circulating on social media to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.”
