Australia Re-Designates Hamas and Hezbollah as Terrorist Entities in Major Security Move
Australia relists Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist groups

In a significant national security decision, the Australian government has formally reinstated Hamas and Hezbollah to its list of organisations subject to strict counter-terrorism sanctions. The move effectively relists these groups as terrorist entities under Australia's robust regulatory framework.

Home Affairs Minister Brendon O'Connor confirmed the designation, which targets the entirety of both organisations without distinction between their political and military wings. This approach aligns with Australia's consistent policy of treating these groups as unified terrorist entities.

The sanctions regime imposes severe financial restrictions, making it a criminal offence for any individual or organisation within Australia to provide assets or resources to these groups. The measures are designed to disrupt funding channels and operational capabilities.

Minister O'Connor emphasised that this decision reflects Australia's unwavering commitment to combating terrorism globally. "The government will continue to take strong action against organisations that threaten peace and security," he stated.

The relisting comes after a comprehensive review process that examined current intelligence assessments and the ongoing activities of both organisations. The government's decision maintains Australia's longstanding position regarding these groups' terrorist designation.

Additionally, the sanctions list includes other extremist organisations, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps's Quds Force remaining designated for its support of terrorist activities. The Australian government continues to monitor and address emerging security threats through its dynamic sanctions framework.
