Women More Likely to Regret One-Night Stands Than Men, Study Finds
A comprehensive international study has revealed that women are significantly more likely to experience regret following one-night stands than men, with sexual satisfaction emerging as the primary factor driving this gender disparity. The research, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, analysed responses from 1,075 participants, including individuals from Great Britain, who evaluated their brief sexual encounters.
Key Findings on Regret and Satisfaction
The investigation discovered that while overall levels of regret were generally low across participants, women consistently reported stronger feelings of regret than men in heterosexual encounters. Sexual satisfaction, particularly whether participants achieved orgasm during the hookup, was identified as the strongest mediator influencing these regretful emotions. Researchers noted that traditional sexual scripts systematically prioritise male pleasure, contributing to this imbalance.
Further analysis revealed that women who engaged in heterosexual one-night stands reported much lower rates of satisfaction and orgasm compared to those who slept with same-sex partners. This suggests that the specific dynamics of sleeping with a man drive the higher regret experienced by women. The gender difference in regret after heterosexual one-night stands was fully explained by sexual satisfaction, heteronomy, intoxication and reputational concern, the researchers emphasised.
Contextual Factors Influencing Regret
The study examined multiple factors that contribute to post-encounter regret:
- Alcohol consumption: Three-quarters of participants had consumed alcohol before their one-night stand, with heavy intoxication causing a significant spike in regret for both genders.
- Meeting circumstances: Half of participants met their one-night stand partner on the same day, with encounters following dates producing less regret than those occurring after parties.
- Relationship status: While most participants were single, some were in relationships or approaching breakups during their encounters.
- Reputational concerns: Women particularly worried about their reputation following these brief sexual experiences.
Interestingly, the research found no gender differences in regret when one-night stands involved same-sex partners, highlighting the specific nature of heterosexual encounter dynamics.
Long-Term Implications and Participant Profiles
The study revealed that feelings of regret tended to intensify over time, potentially because immediate physical gratification fades from memory more quickly than negative moral concerns. As individuals mature and potentially enter committed relationships, their values regarding casual sex might shift to the negative, the researchers noted.
Participant data showed that approximately 20 percent of respondents, who averaged 25 years of age, reported having 10 or more one-night stands in their lifetime. Contrary to popular assumptions, most participants evaluated their experiences neutrally or positively, with nearly half reporting no regret whatsoever.
Comparative Research and Recommendations
The research team suggested that enhancing the quality of sexual experiences through improved communication and increased focus on mutual satisfaction offers the most promising path toward reducing negative outcomes. This finding aligns with separate research published recently indicating that women in romantic relationships actually report higher sexual satisfaction than men, challenging common assumptions about gender and pleasure.
The statistically significant gender difference in regret was moderate in size, with analysis revealing that about 70 percent of women's most recent heterosexual one-night stand experiences resulted in higher regret than men's average experiences. The researchers concluded that decisions about sexual experiences remain among the most common causes of regret in humans, with systematic gender differences persisting across the entire distribution of heterosexual one-night stand encounters.
