Superdrug's Great British Sex Report 2026 Uncovers Intimate Truths
A groundbreaking new survey has broken the silence on a traditionally taboo subject, providing a comprehensive look into the sex lives of adults across the United Kingdom. Conducted by experts from Superdrug, the study involved 2,000 sexually active participants from various regions, aiming to compare actual sexual frequency with desired levels.
The Stark Reality of the 'Pleasure Gap'
The findings reveal a pronounced 'pleasure gap' in the nation. On average, British adults engage in 105 sexual encounters annually, which translates to approximately two sessions per week. However, their ideal frequency is significantly higher at 144 times per year, equating to about three times weekly. This discrepancy highlights a widespread dissatisfaction, with only 22% of women and 26% of men reporting they are 'always' content with their sexual activity levels.
Gender Disparities in Desire and Satisfaction
The survey indicates that men are particularly affected by this gap. Nearly 40% of male respondents expressed a preference for sex two to three times per week, underscoring a stronger desire for increased frequency. Moreover, the report uncovered a stark gender difference in orgasm rates during partnered sex. Men are almost twice as likely to experience orgasm, with 48% always reaching climax compared to just 24% of women.
Shifting Attitudes Towards Intimacy and Quality
Despite many Brits wishing for more frequent sex, Sex and Relationship coach Gemma Nice advocates for a focus on quality over quantity. She notes a growing trend towards intentional intimacy, where mindfulness and emotional connection take precedence. 'As wellbeing becomes more central to younger generations, people are bringing mindfulness into the bedroom; slowing down, staying present, and tuning into how they actually feel,' Nice explained.
This evolution may lead to fewer casual encounters and more meaningful connections, driven by a deeper need for emotional and mental fulfillment. Intimacy is increasingly viewed not just as a physical act but as an experience that supports overall health and happiness.
Embracing Novelty and Enhancing Pleasure
To reignite desire and maintain freshness in relationships, Nice suggests exploring new experiences in the bedroom. Trying novel activities can trigger dopamine and serotonin release, enhancing pleasure and excitement. This approach aligns with the survey's insights into what people value most about sex, which includes:
- Closeness and intimacy
- Specific sex acts
- Feeling good and orgasm
- Pleasing a partner
- Love, caring, and trust
- Excitement, adventure, and novelty
- Fantasy and imagination
Superdrug's report, titled the Great British Sex Report 2026, aims to understand evolving behaviors, preferences, and attitudes towards sex. By surveying a diverse sample, it provides valuable insights into how Brits are navigating intimacy in modern times, emphasizing the importance of communication and personal fulfillment in sexual relationships.
