Three men have been jailed for life for gang raping a schoolgirl in Bangladesh. The men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were sentenced at a court in Faridpur, southern Bangladesh, on Tuesday.
Details of the attack
Nasir Molla, 26, from a rural area in the country's south-west Magura District, along with Saikat Chandra, 26, and Nasir Molla, 36, from a village in the central Faridpur District, were all found guilty following a trial, local reports say.
The victim was a secondary school ninth-grade student, according to case documents. The prosecution reportedly said the girl got speaking to Molla, 26, on her mobile phone before he travelled near home to meet her on January 28 2020.
Abduction and assault
The accused then allegedly forced the girl onto a boat on the Madhumati River and took her to a sandbar, according to local media. There they allegedly threatened and gang-raped her while recording videos and taking photographs of the incident, The Business Standard newspaper reports.
After the girl became seriously ill, the men are said to have brought the girl back by boat and left her near her home at about 11pm local time.
Investigation and sentencing
A police investigation into the incident was launched after the girl told family members. The men were also fined 100,000 Bangladeshi Taka (about £606) each as they were sentenced at a court in Faridpur, southern Bangladesh.
