A 13-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men in an abandoned house in Malaysia. The suspects have been charged and appeared in court, facing up to 20 years in prison and whipping if convicted.
Details of the Incident
The alleged attack occurred on May 27. An 18-year-old is accused of raping the girl by the roadside in Kampung Ragu, Manek Urai. Two other defendants, aged 24 and 23, are accused of raping her at an abandoned house in Kampung Sunga Tias between 1am and 1.30am the following day.
Court Proceedings
The three men were charged and appeared in the Sessions Court in Malaysia. The case is scheduled for a return to court on July 12. If convicted, they could face jail terms of up to 20 years and whipping.
Context of Rising Crime
This incident comes amid a reported 11.1% increase in crime in Malaysia in 2024, driven largely by assaults and property offences. Reported rapes rose by 12.1% to 1,899, while robberies decreased by 6.8%.
Previous Controversial Case
In a separate, unconnected case, a gang rapist walked free from a Malaysian court on a “good behaviour bond.” The boy, convicted in 2021, was sentenced to a behaviour bond instead of community service. Prosecutors appealed for a severe custodial sentence, but the appeal was dismissed. His two co-accused were jailed for 13 years each.
