Laura Caron, 36, has pleaded guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct after giving birth to a child fathered by her 13-year-old former pupil. The plea agreement entails a five-year state prison sentence.
Guilty Plea and Background
Caron entered the plea in a case that began when she taught the boy and his brother at Middle Township Elementary School in Cape May Court House. The family developed a close bond with Caron and allowed their sons and daughter to stay at her residence several nights a week, according to the New York Post.
Prosecutors allege Caron engaged in inappropriate sexual relations with her former student, a relationship that started when he was 11 in 2016 and continued until he was 15. Caron fell pregnant when the boy was 13 and gave birth to their daughter in 2019, keeping the secret for years. She was 27 at the time.
Discovery and Charges
In December 2024, the boy's father noticed a striking resemblance between Caron's child, himself, and his son in a Facebook photograph, leading to the revelation. Authorities also reported that the victim's brother once observed Caron sexually assaulting his sleeping sibling.
The victim has spoken in Caron's defence, stating he was the one who made the first move in the alleged relationship. He told the Daily Mail: "They need to drop all charges. I wasn't groomed or raped or manipulated by her. She never initiated anything. I started everything. If it was up to me she wouldn't have been in jail."
Sentencing and Consequences
Caron faced charges of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child in January this year. As part of the plea agreement, she must relinquish her teaching licence and all future public employment. She will also undergo an assessment to determine whether her conduct is repetitive or compulsive, which could influence her sentencing.
