A former teacher has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing a schoolgirl, whom he lured to his home under the pretense of providing extra tuition. Gary Day-Davies, 55, was convicted of multiple sexual offenses, including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault by touching of a child.
Abuse Across Multiple Locations
Liverpool Crown Court heard that the abuse took place between 2006 and 2009. The victim, a pupil at a Salford school where Day-Davies taught, was attacked in the school library, a classroom store cupboard, and at the teacher's home after he invited her for additional lessons. The victim reported the abuse to Greater Manchester Police in 2022.
Victim's Statement
In a statement read to the court, the victim expressed relief following the verdict, stating: "Since receiving the news of the guilty verdicts, I feel like an enormous weight was lifted off my shoulders. The emotional trauma bond that I have endured for the last 20 years has finally severed." She added, "I can eventually breathe and think for myself without constant fear of the consequences. I finally have justice – this is justice not for me as a child but now as an adult too."
The victim acknowledged the long road to recovery ahead: "As much as the outcome gives me some form of closure, I have not fully processed the full extent of this situation yet. I know I have a long road ahead of me in terms of recovery and I am very much looking forward to see what the future looks like for me."
Teacher's Denial and Sentencing
Day-Davies, from Tyldesley, denied the offenses and claimed the victim "must have just held a bit of a grudge" against him. However, the jury convicted him, and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, June 8.
Police Response
Inspector Dave Ogden of Greater Manchester Police's Criminal Investigation Department in Salford commented: "Day-Davies took advantage of the young age of the survivor to invite her to his home and sexually abuse her. He further sexually abused the survivor in the library and store cupboard in a classroom." He emphasized that "time is no barrier when it comes to being sexually abused – no matter how long ago it was, or how old you were at the time, we will listen to you. We will support you, investigate, and act robustly against perpetrators. We will take your allegations seriously and treat you with dignity and respect."
