A sadistic rapist faces dying behind bars after being branded an untreatable psychopath during sentencing. Amadeusz Giers attacked two women in a 10-year reign of terror in Edinburgh, subjecting them to extreme surveillance and psychological abuse.
The 39-year-old was convicted of the offences last November, but it took 11 months for specialist risk assessors to conclude he should never be freed – and would pose a high risk behind bars. He has even continued to torment both women from jail, subjecting them to rage-fuelled victim-blaming.
Lifelong Restriction Order
At the High Court in Livingston last week, judge Susan Craig sentenced Giers to an Order for Lifelong Restriction with a punishment of six years. But she made clear that number was academic, and the high risk Giers poses means he could be resistant to remedial interventions.
She said: “You lack insight into your entrenched attitudes – and behaviours are resistant to intervention. The assessor’s view is that your entrenched personality impairment is such that for you to make long-term and sustained change in his life, you will require external measures of control and restriction to be placed upon you for the rest of your life.”
Psychopathic traits and risk
The judge said he was assessed as having complex personality traits with a high prevalence of psychopathic personality characteristics and dysfunction, plus antisocial personality disorder and borderline personality disorder. This means, she added, “the measures of lifelong restriction will be required to manage the severe, enduring and harmful level of risk you pose to the public”.
Giers’ first victim suffered at his hands between July 2014 and August 2018. He subjected her to a rape and attempted rape, isolated her from her family and friends and concealed a tracker in her car to monitor her movements. He also set up a fake account on a dating website to target a man he believed she was speaking with.
Second victim and further abuse
Between April 2019 and April 2024, he subjected a second woman to more extreme levels of violence and threats. He placed recording devices in her home and refused to let her walk her dogs without him. He also subjected her to a knifepoint rape in April 2024 despite being bailed not to approach or contact her in February that year.
He was convicted of four charges across 10 years, all of them being aggravated by abuse of his victims. Judge Craig added Giers continued to harass the women from jail and added his name to the sex offenders register and banned from contacting victims.
Detective Sergeant Barry Carlin said: “I would like to acknowledge both the victims and the strength they showed throughout the investigation and court process. I hope this result gives them comfort.”
