Luxury Real Estate Brothers Convicted in Shocking Sex Trafficking Trial
Three brothers, including two of the nation's most successful luxury real estate brokers, have been convicted on sex trafficking charges following a five-week trial that exposed allegations of drugging and raping multiple women. The verdict was delivered on Monday after a jury deliberated since Thursday, concluding a case that has sent shockwaves through the high-end property industry.
Testimonies Reveal Pattern of Assaults
During the trial, eleven women provided harrowing testimony, describing sexual assaults by one or more of the brothers: twins Oren and Alon Alexander, both 38, and Tal Alexander, 39. Prosecutors indicated that more than sixty women have come forward claiming they were raped by the brothers, with attacks occurring in luxurious settings such as the Hamptons, a Caribbean cruise, and a ski trip in Aspen, Colorado.
The women recounted being invited to these exclusive locales, where they were allegedly given alcohol that left them feeling disoriented and paralyzed after consuming less than one drink. Many testified they believed they had been drugged, losing control of their bodies in situations that turned violent.
Defense Claims and Prosecution Rebuttal
Defense lawyers argued that the accusers had faulty memories or were motivated by financial gain, suggesting any sexual encounters were consensual. They acknowledged the brothers were womanizers but maintained their innocence regarding criminal charges.
Prosecutors strongly countered these claims, with prosecutor Elizabeth Espinosa noting that only two of the women have pending lawsuits, both of whom are wealthy themselves. One accuser, the daughter of a billionaire, testified about being raped by Alon Alexander in Aspen when she was 17, stating, "I don't want their money. I just don't want them to have it."
High-Profile Connections and Civil Lawsuits
Oren and Tal Alexander were formerly brokers at Douglas Elliman before founding their own firm, Official, while Alon Alexander worked at the family's private security company. Beyond the criminal conviction, the brothers face approximately two dozen civil lawsuits, including one filed by Tracy Tutor, a star of "Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles" on Bravo. Tutor alleges Oren Alexander drugged and assaulted her in a restaurant bathroom during a real estate event in New York City.
Another accuser, Lindsey Acree, an artist and gallery owner in Brooklyn, testified about being raped by Tal Alexander and another man in the Hamptons in 2011. She explained her decision to sue, saying, "If there's a kid with a stick who keeps hitting people, you take their stick away. Money is their stick, so you take it away so they can't hurt people anymore."
Evidence Presented at Trial
Prosecutors bolstered their case with text and email messages in which the brothers appeared to boast about sexual exploits and their knowledge of drugs' effects on women's inhibitions. Evidence included a blog post titled "It's not rape if ..." and communications about sneaking drugs onto a cruise ship. Prosecutors also presented recordings of at least one assault and shared photos of victims, painting a picture of systematic misconduct.
Many women described meeting the brothers at nightclubs, parties, or through dating apps, with some being taken on trips to ritzy destinations where flights and luxury accommodations were paid for. One woman testified about meeting the brothers at a party at actor Zac Efron's Manhattan apartment in 2012, though Efron was not accused of any wrongdoing.
The case has highlighted what multiple women called an open secret in the real estate world regarding the brothers' behavior, with numerous individuals coming forward after initial lawsuits were filed to report sexual harassment or assault. The Associated Press typically does not identify sexual assault victims unless they choose to come forward publicly, as Acree and Tutor have done.
