Police in India are searching for a man after an 11-month-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in a village in Ludhiana, in the northern state of Punjab. The baby was found injured by her mother, who returned home to hear her daughter crying inside.
Suspect identified and on the run
A criminal case has been registered against a 35-year-old man, identified as Sanjay Kumar, who is originally from the Purnia district of Bihar, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI). Police have not yet arrested him, and he remains on the run.
The alleged attack happened on Saturday. The girl's mother had gone out and left her daughter at home, according to the complaint she later made to police.
Investigation and legal action
When she returned, she heard the 11-month-old crying inside. She went in and found her daughter injured, while the suspect had already fled. Police said the baby later underwent a medical examination.
Officers then registered a case against the 35-year-old under relevant sections of India's Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Investigating officer Gurmeet Singh said the man remains on the run and police are trying to find him.
