A man who killed his wife and another man he intended to frame for her murder has been handed a life sentence. Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, used a fetish website to orchestrate the crime.
The Crime and Sentencing
Brendan Banfield was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan. The killings occurred on February 24, 2023, in Herndon, Virginia. Banfield had been having an affair with the family's Brazilian childcare worker, Juliana Peres Magalhães.
Plot to Kill and Frame
Prosecutors revealed that Banfield and Magalhães set up Ryan to be killed and framed for Christine's murder. Banfield claimed he shot Ryan after finding him attacking his wife, but evidence showed a premeditated scheme. Magalhães testified that Banfield wanted to marry his mistress but needed to "get rid of" his wife first, as divorce would leave her with more money and custody of their daughter.
Magalhães, who started working for the Banfields in 2021 at age 21, told jurors she and Banfield impersonated Christine on a fetish website to lure Ryan to the house for a sexual encounter involving a knife. They staged the scene to look like a violent intruder was shot.
Day of the Killings
On the day of the murders, Magalhães waited in a car with the Banfields' child. When Ryan arrived, she called Banfield, who was at a nearby McDonald's. Banfield brought the child to the basement, then went to the bedroom where Ryan was. He shot Ryan and then stabbed Christine with the knife Ryan had brought. When Magalhães saw Ryan moving, she fired a second shot that killed him.
Testimony and Sentencing
Magalhães pleaded guilty to manslaughter and agreed to testify against Banfield. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison. During the trial, Banfield denied the allegations, stating, "I loved her very much... I am not responsible for her death." Christine's sister condemned Banfield, saying, "He could have divorced and moved on, but divorce would have required relinquishing control... His actions were not driven by love, but a desire for power, deception, and a complete disregard for the lives he destroyed."
