Man jailed for allegedly raping two-year-old relative

A 48-year-old man has been arrested and jailed in eastern India on suspicion of raping a two-year-old girl who is a relative, police said.

The accused lured the girl away by promising to take her to the fair and buy her snacks. He then took her to a mango orchard about 200 meters from her house, where he committed the crime.

Suspect remanded in custody

Vishnudev Saday, from Dhobigama village in Bihar's Darbhanga district, appeared before a court on Sunday and was remanded in judicial custody. He is a relative of the girl.

He had earlier been questioned by officers and given a medical examination at the Community Health Centre in Kewati-Runway.

Child's condition and treatment

The child is being treated in the intensive care unit of the gynaecology department at Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Doctors have said she is now out of danger, according to local reports.

The case was registered at Kewati police station on October 18 as FIR 341/26 after the girl's mother made a complaint. Police have invoked the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and India's rape laws.

The girl was first given first aid at the Kewati-Runway health centre before being transferred to DMCH for specialist care.

Officials visit and evidence collection

District Magistrate Kaushal Kumar and Rural Superintendent of Police Sakshi Kumari later visited the hospital to check on her condition and the treatment she was receiving. The magistrate told hospital staff to make sure she received the best possible care.

Ms Kumari and Shubhendra Kumar, the sub-divisional officer for Sadar (SDO-2) in Kamtoul, also travelled to Suman village, where they spoke to members of the girl's family and gathered details of the alleged offence.

A forensic science laboratory team visited the scene and collected evidence.
