A male star of the reality television show Married at First Sight UK was arrested on suspicion of rape on Thursday, June 18, following a bombshell investigation by the BBC's Panorama programme. The man has not been named, and the alleged victim is also entitled to lifelong anonymity under UK law.
Arrest Follows Panorama Documentary Allegations
The arrest came after the broadcast of a Panorama documentary titled The Dark Side of Married at First Sight, which aired in May. In the programme, two female cast members alleged they had been raped, while a third claimed she had been subjected to a non-consensual sex act. All three men involved denied the allegations. London's Metropolitan Police subsequently launched an investigation and appealed for anyone who believed they had been a victim of sexual assault after participating in the show to come forward.
Met Police Confirm Arrest and Bail
In a statement to BBC News, the Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest, saying: "This relates to an ongoing investigation, being led by the Met Police. He has since been bailed while enquiries remain ongoing." The force did not provide further details about the suspect or the specific allegations leading to the arrest.
Channel 4 Responds to Allegations
Channel 4, which broadcasts Married at First Sight UK, initially said all allegations were "wholly uncorroborated and disputed." The broadcaster and production company CPL maintained that their welfare protocols were robust and comprehensive. In a statement at the time of the documentary, Channel 4 said: "We have not seen the programme and will comment when we know more."
Following the broadcast, Channel 4 commissioned a review into contributor welfare on the show. Priya Dogra, Chief Executive of Channel 4, later told the Mirror: "I want to express my sympathy to contributors who have clearly been distressed after taking part in Married at First Sight UK. The well-being of our contributors is always of paramount importance."
Show Removed from Streaming Services
The long-running show, one of Channel 4's most popular, was removed from all streaming services after the allegations of sexual assault and rape emerged. The BBC Panorama investigation alleged that two women who appeared on MAFS had been raped, sparking widespread concern over participant safety. Express.co.uk has contacted Channel 4 for further comment.
