Indian man jailed for raping sister who reminded him of late wife

A 38-year-old man in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested for repeatedly raping his 16-year-old biological sister, claiming she reminded him of his late wife. Police confirmed the man was jailed after the victim's sister-in-law filed a formal complaint.

Suspect confessed to assaults

Inspector Shamsher Bahadur, in charge of Thariyaon Police Station, said: 'A 16-year-old sister has accused her 38-year-old biological brother of rape. Video evidence has also been provided. Medical examination has confirmed the rape. A case has been registered under the POCSO Act and other sections, and the accused has been sent to jail.' The man confessed to the assaults during a police interview.

Victim recorded evidence after family ignored pleas

The victim had repeatedly pleaded with her family for help, but her complaints were initially ignored. With the help of friends, she recorded video evidence of the assaults and presented it to her relatives, who then realised the extent of the crime. A report was filed 18 months ago, and the man was arrested on Wednesday.

Suspect previously jailed for wife's murder

The 38-year-old labourer had previously been jailed for killing his wife, allegedly for her refusal to take drugs. He was released in June 2024 and returned to his home in a village about 28 km from the district headquarters. He claimed he assaulted his sister because he 'saw his deceased wife' in her.

Legal proceedings and current status

A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code. Police say medical examinations confirmed sexual assault, and further evidence is being collected. The man appeared in court on Thursday afternoon and was remanded in custody until a court date is set. The victim currently lives with her mother, middle brother, and sister-in-law.
