An 18-year-old woman from Myanmar has reported that her husband repeatedly locked her inside a rental property in Hyderabad, where his three friends sexually assaulted her, according to a police report cited by India Today.
The teenager said she met Mohammad Fayez while living in Bangladesh. He promised to marry her and brought her to India in May without her family's knowledge. They married in Hyderabad days after arriving and moved into a rental property in the area.
Alleged assaults and threats
Around a month into their new life, Fayez began bringing three of his friends to their home. Ahmad Mujeeb, Noor Kamal and Zia-ur-Rehman were described as also being natives of Myanmar and residents of Hyderabad.
The teenager said her husband would repeatedly lock the house from the outside, leaving her alone with his friends. She alleged that they sexually assaulted her multiple times, with two of the three men threatening to kill her if she told anyone.
Fear and uncertainty about how to make a police report prevented her from going to the authorities, she said.
Landlord intervention and police complaint
The case came to light when the property owner came to collect rent on October 23. After being unable to gain access, the landlord broke the lock and found the teenager in a room inside. He freed her, and she then contacted a family member using a borrowed phone and travelled to their house.
On October 26, she lodged an official complaint at Kanchanbagh Police Station. A report was filed and the four men have been charged with rape, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation.
