A GP who practised in the North West for years has been struck off the medical register after a tribunal found he conducted 'sexually motivated' examinations on two female patients in Scotland. Dr Matthew Jones, previously known as Matthew Adam, was found to have inappropriately touched two women during consultations without clinical justification.
Details of the Case
The allegations against Dr Jones date back to 2015, when he worked in Scotland under the name Matthew Adam. The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) ruled his interactions with two women amounted to professional misconduct. Dr Jones admitted to taking explicit photographs of himself, including one depicting him in a state of arousal in front of a sex toy, while working at St Margaret's Hospital in Auchterarder.
Patient Experiences
One patient attended a consultation for abdominal pain but felt uncomfortable when Dr Jones placed his hand beneath the waistband of her trousers and underwear. The practice manager noted the woman left visibly upset after reporting the doctor's hand moved inappropriately lower during the examination. Her partner told the tribunal she returned to the car 'in tears' before they went back to the surgery to make a complaint.
The panel concluded there was no clinical need for the examination and found her allegations proven. A second patient, referred to as Patient B, had an unreliable recollection due to being given morphine at the time. However, the tribunal determined it was more likely than not that Jones had touched her intimately.
Serious Abuse of Position
The panel said there was 'no plausible explanation' for Jones' conduct and determined his actions were 'sexually motivated'. The MPTS imposed an immediate suspension and erased him from the medical register. Tribunal chair Nessa Sharkett stated: 'The Tribunal was satisfied that these actions represented a serious abuse of Dr Jones' professional position.'
Previous Employment
Dr Jones worked as a salaried GP at Park Street Surgery in Bootle, Liverpool, from April 2022 to October 2025. The practice stated they were aware of historic allegations but had no concerns during his employment. He changed his name from Matthew Edward Adam to Matthew Edward Jones in 2021 after being acquitted of criminal sexual assault charges in Glasgow.
The GMC brought the case, which was decided on the balance of probabilities, the civil standard of proof. The tribunal received oral evidence from Patient A in November 2022 and Patient B in October 2022.
