Girl, 17, gang raped and threatened with death in India

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped by three men who then threatened to kill her if she told anyone what had happened. The schoolgirl had been with a male friend when the pair were allegedly taken to a forested area in Pachmarhi, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Incident on August 19

Police said the incident happened on August 19 after the girl's friend travelled to Pachmarhi to meet her. The pair met three local men they knew at a bus stop before travelling with them in a vehicle to a forested area.

Police said the girl's friend resisted after the pair were threatened by the men. He was then allegedly restrained and tied to the vehicle before the 17-year-old was sexually assaulted.

Threats and aftermath

Afterwards, the three accused allegedly dropped the girl and her friend back at the bus stop. They are accused of threatening to kill the pair if they told anyone about what had happened.

Police said the teenager was so frightened following the alleged attack that she stopped going to school. She later told her older sister what had happened and went with her family to the Pachmarhi police station.

Investigation and arrests

Officers opened a case against three suspects under relevant sections of India's Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. A female sub-inspector from Pipariya recorded the girl's statement, and the teenager also underwent a medical examination.

Narmadapuram Superintendent of Police Sai Krishna Thota said all those allegedly involved in the incident had been arrested.
