French man arrested at Sydney airport over Melbourne assault

A 22-year-old French man was dramatically apprehended at Sydney International Airport just as he was preparing to board a flight out of Australia.

Alleged New Year's Eve Assault in City Laneway

Detectives from the sexual crime squad allege that Adam Berguiga was partying at a nightclub in Melbourne's Central Business District on New Year's Eve. It is claimed that when a woman fell over on the dancefloor, Berguiga escorted her from the venue.

The incident is alleged to have moved to Coors Laneway, a tiny passage situated between Little Bourke and Lonsdale streets, in the early hours of Thursday morning. Police assert that the sexual assault occurred there.

Following the alleged attack, the woman was reportedly led back towards Little Bourke Street before Berguiga fled the scene, according to a report from 7News.

The Airport Arrest and Pending Extradition

After an investigation, officers issued an arrest warrant for Berguiga at 9.30pm on Saturday. Authorities had released CCTV footage and composite images to aid in identifying the suspect.

The breakthrough came around midday on Sunday, when Berguiga was recognised by authorities within the international terminal at Sydney Airport. He was taken into custody before he could leave the country.

Victoria Police are now in the process of extraditing Berguiga back to Melbourne to face charges. He is expected to be brought before a magistrate on Monday.

Legal Process and Next Steps

The case highlights the coordinated efforts of Australian law enforcement across state borders. The swift arrest at a major international transport hub prevented the suspect's departure.

The extradition process from New South Wales to Victoria is now underway, ensuring the case will be heard in the jurisdiction where the crime allegedly occurred. The court appearance scheduled for Monday will mark the formal beginning of legal proceedings.
