A man who posed as an internationally renowned clairvoyant has been jailed for sexually assaulting two women during psychic consultations. John Starkey, 74, of Rhodfa'r Grug, Upper Colwyn Bay, was described as a 'complete charlatan' by a judge at Caernarfon Crown Court.
The Crimes
Starkey claimed to have 40 years of experience and appearances on major TV and radio shows. However, he used his psychic sessions as a cover to launch attacks. He was first investigated after a woman reported being sexually assaulted in Wolverhampton in 2018. Months later, he lured the same victim to a London hotel room under false pretenses, telling her to strip naked for a twisted 'initiation' for 'spiritual cleansing.'
The second victim was assaulted in October 2022 while on holiday in Llandudno. She visited a shop where Starkey worked for a consultation. He told her to undress and sexually touched her.
Sentencing
Starkey admitted charges of sexual assault by penetration and two counts of sexual assault. Judge Nicola Jones sentenced him to four years and five months in prison, with half served in custody and the rest on licence. He must also comply with indefinite notification requirements and restraining orders. Judge Jones condemned his actions as a clear breach of trust.
In mitigation, defence lawyer Robert Fitt said Starkey had previous good character and severe health problems, with a life expectancy of three to five years.
