Ex-ride operator admits assaulting 19 girls under 13

A former theme park ride operator has admitted to sexually assaulting 19 girls under the age of 13. Josef Luke Hammond, 24, was working at Drayton Manor, a theme park in Staffordshire, when a girl told her parent he touched her inappropriately.

Arrest and investigation

Park bosses reviewed the CCTV and sent Hammond home before police arrested him later that day in August 2024. Officers found the Birmingham local had sexually assaulted 19 victims. Hammond, who joined the park in March 2024, admitted the offences at Stafford Crown Court on Monday.

Bail and sentencing

He has now been bailed ahead of his sentencing date at Stafford Crown Court on December 11.

Detective Inspector Vanessa Furnival said: ‘I’d like to recognise the bravery of the victims in this case, who have all shown immense courage in coming forward and supporting us with our efforts to secure this outcome today. I’d also like to recognise the rapid response from staff at Drayton Manor, who immediately removed Hammond from his duties. While we’re pleased to secure this conviction, we would advise any parents or guardians who think their child may have been a victim to get in touch with the police directly.’

Park response

A spokesperson for Drayton Manor said they were ‘appalled’ by the incidents. They said: ‘As soon as concerns were brought to our attention, the individual was immediately suspended and then dismissed from their employment. The park has ‘robust’ safeguarding policies, including staff reference checks and training. We recognise the impact that such incidents can have on victims and their families, and we commend those who came forward and supported the investigation,’ the spokesperson added.
