Former Premier League striker Rafa Mir has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison after being found guilty of violent sexual assault and assault causing injury. The Provincial Court of Justice in Valencia confirmed the sentence on Monday, following his arrest in September 2024.
Details of the Assault
Mir, 28, met the victim at a nightclub in the early hours of September 1, 2024, before taking her to his residence. Prosecutors alleged he threw her into a pool with her clothes on and then kissed her face and neck forcefully. The second assault occurred when the victim returned to retrieve her handbag after fleeing. She testified that Mir locked her in a bathroom and continued the assault despite her pleas to stop.
Legal Proceedings
Mir protested his innocence during a hearing in May, but prosecutors had sought a ten-and-a-half-year term. He was first charged in October 2024 after an examining judge found sufficient evidence. He has also been ordered to pay over £55,000 in damages. Fellow footballer Pablo Jara was also sentenced to two and a half years for a separate assault on a friend of the victim.
Career Background
Mir joined Wolves in January 2018 but made only four appearances, none in the Premier League. He had loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Huesca, Valencia, and Elche, before a permanent move to Sevilla in 2021.
