Emmerdale Ofcom Complaints Over Dr Todd Assault Scene Reach 121
Emmerdale Gets 121 Ofcom Complaints Over Dr Todd Assault

Emmerdale has been hit with more than 100 Ofcom complaints following a controversial scene that aired last Sunday, depicting Dr Caitlin Todd assaulting Charity Dingle. The ITV soap opera, which aimed to raise awareness about female-on-female sexual violence, has left many viewers feeling disturbed.

Dr Todd's Menacing Turn

Actress Caroline Harker joined the cast of Emmerdale earlier this year as the sinister Dr Caitlin Todd. Her storyline initially revolved around her bullying of young trainee doctor Jacob Sugden. Viewers watched as Dr Todd consistently belittled Jacob, piling on excessive work and criticizing his every move. Frustrated by his mentor's behavior, Jacob decided to report her to HR. He was surprised to discover that others had also filed complaints, but he withdrew his own after Charity Dingle encouraged him to do so. Unbeknownst to Jacob, Dr Todd had learned the true parentage of baby Leyla and had been blackmailing Charity for thousands of pounds to keep the secret.

Assault Scene Sparks Outrage

While some viewers hoped Dr Todd might find redemption, her character took a darker turn when she sexually assaulted Charity. The incident occurred after the two women appeared to reconcile. A drunk Charity confronted Todd at the Woolpack pub, daring her to expose the secret as she had nothing left to lose. Todd sat beside Charity and attempted to kiss her, but was rejected. After Charity made some cutting remarks, Todd seemed to leave. However, as Charity fell asleep on the sofa, Todd noticed the empty wine bottle and sneered: "Wake up. Drunk, disgusting w****! One too many? Bad, bad girl. You should know better than to lose control." The horrific assault then unfolded as Todd unzipped Charity's trousers, waking her. Charity begged Todd to stop and sat up, trying to process what had happened.

Ofcom Complaints and Viewer Reactions

The broadcasting watchdog Ofcom confirmed it had received 121 complaints about the episode, which aired on Sunday, June 7. A spokesperson said the complaints related to the doctor's assault on Charity. On social media, viewers expressed their discomfort, with many saying the scene made them "feel sick," while also praising the soap for tackling such a sensitive issue.

Producer's Statement on Storyline Importance

Before the episode aired, Emmerdale producer Sophie Roper explained the significance of the storyline: "Charity's storyline will explore the impact of sexual violence, and though this heinous act is fundamentally about power, we'll explore the complexities of how Charity processes her trauma when the perpetrator is a woman. With little conversation surrounding female-on-female assault, we'll explore the overwhelming feelings of isolation many survivors experience and will examine the disparity between the legal term sexual assault and the fact that many women in Charity's position feel this minimises what's happened to them, because they feel like they've been raped. Though difficult viewing at times, Charity's resilience will inspire hope as she confronts what has happened to her."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and is also available to stream on ITVX and YouTube from 7am.
