Emmerdale viewers are convinced they have uncovered Dr Caitlin Todd’s downfall, but she does not end up behind bars. The ITV soap character, portrayed by Caroline Harker, has been blackmailing Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) for weeks over the true parentage of Leyla Sugden.
The storyline took a dark turn at the weekend when Dr Todd sexually assaulted Charity at Jacobs Fold. After attending her granddaughter Sarah’s (Katie Hill) 21st birthday party, Charity rushed to the police station to report the attack.
Todd was questioned by police on Wednesday (June 10) but lied about the encounter, claiming the sex was consensual and that Charity had been pursuing her relentlessly. Without sufficient evidence, the detectives released her pending further investigation. Soon after, Todd arrived at Charity’s door to taunt her.
“What a load of rubbish! But then you’d know all about that, wouldn’t you?” Todd said, as Charity demanded she leave. Todd continued: “I’m not the one making up fairy stories, am I?” Charity replied: “We both know what you did,” to which Todd warned: “And I know what you and Ross [Barton] did. Difference is, there’s only one of us whose little tale can be corroborated.”
Todd tormented Charity further, saying: “See, the thing about accusations is, if they’re not true, they quickly fall apart... There has to be some kind of proof in their DNA, if you catch my drift. Otherwise, it’s all just hearsay. And it’s hearsay from a proven liar, so it’s not worth the breath it hangs on.”
Later, DS Reid (Angela Lonsdale) visited Charity and revealed that the medical examination results were inconclusive, leaving Charity hopeless. Todd was then seen leaving the village for a new job in Sheffield, but fans believe this is not the end.
Fans Predict Todd’s Downfall
Many viewers think the evil doctor will face punishment, but not through a criminal conviction. Instead, they believe a civil lawsuit from Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant) could be her undoing. Todd cruelly bullied Jacob at the hospital, and fans suggest he and other bullied interns could band together to sue her.
One Reddit user wrote: “Why don’t Jacob and the other interns bullied by Todd band together? They could have looked at no-win/no-fee lawyers for a civil lawsuit against her. I don’t understand why the whole thing was dropped just because Todd retired. If it went to court, any compensation could have been paid out upon the sale of the house in Sheffield. She needs to be punished.”
Another viewer added: “As much as I hate Caitlin (Dr. Todd), I don’t want her exit to be where she gets away with what she did to Charity! She can’t just drive off.” A third commented: “The Dingles need to band together and hunt Todd down.”
