A care home head chef has admitted to a campaign of sexual assaults against young women who were exercising alone on a popular Brighton and Hove beachfront.
Predatory Pattern on the Seafront
Fattah Derrahi, a 59-year-old from Hove, pleaded guilty to nine counts of sexual assault at Lewes Crown Court, with an agreement that two further charges will be added. His crimes took place over a five-year period, specifically between 2021 and 2025.
The court heard how Derrahi, described as a 'family man', would target his victims in the early morning as they exercised or warmed down on Hove Lawns, an area of grassy promenade close to the beach. The women, who did not know each other, were each approached alone.
The 'Good Energy' Ruse
Derrahi used a consistent and manipulative tactic to engage his victims. He would watch them before approaching and telling them they had 'good energy'. He then offered what he deceitfully called a 'touching therapy' session, using this as a pretext to grope them.
The pattern of offending only came to an end after Sussex Police issued a public appeal featuring CCTV images. This led to Derrahi's identification and arrest. Five of his victims subsequently picked him out of a police identity parade, providing crucial evidence for the case.
Remanded Ahead of Sentencing
Appearing in court wearing a black polo shirt, glasses, and grey joggers, Derrahi confirmed his name and entered his guilty pleas. Recorder Sarah Elliott KC remanded him in custody ahead of sentencing, which is scheduled for February next year.
Detective Inspector Sharon Ford of Sussex Police commented on the impact of the crimes, stating: 'I know these reports were concerning for the public, and I would like to thank everyone who came forward with information to support the investigation.'
She added that police would continue proactive patrols in the Hove Lawns area as part of their commitment to protecting women and girls in the city.
