Trio jailed over brutal Greenock attack that scarred victim

Three men have been jailed over a brutal attack in Greenock that left their victim scarred for life. William Kerrigan, 23, Andrew Rennie, 26, and Lee Heron, 29, pled guilty last month to the serious assault of a 44-year-old man.

Attack in Cathcart Square

A disturbance was first reported in the Renfrewshire town's Cathcart Square in the early hours of Sunday, January 25, 2026. Emergency services including Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service raced to the scene in the Inverclyde town after the disturbance broke out.

The man was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow after suffering serious injuries which have since left him permanently disfigured.

Sentences Handed Down

At the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday, Kerrigan was locked up for four years and six months, Rennie was handed an 18-month sentence, and Heron got 15 months behind bars for the incident which left the man seriously injured.

Investigation and Public Appeal

An investigation was launched alongside a public appeal for information. A large cordon was erected around Bank Street, Clyde Square and Cathcart Street and drivers requiring access to Wellpark Mid Kirk Church were diverted.

Detective Inspector Nicky Beattie said: “The injured man sustained injuries that endangered his life and have caused permanent disfigurement. Such violence is not acceptable in our communities and these three men are now facing the consequences of their involvement.

“I would like to thank the public who assisted officers during their investigation.”
