Attack Captured on Video
Samuel Olvhoj, 38, has been sentenced to five years in prison for a violent attack in which he plunged a broken bottle into a man's neck. The incident occurred in the early hours of January 28, 2026, on a street in Shiremoor, North Tyneside. A member of the public filmed the confrontation, which showed Olvhoj slashing at the victim with a broken glass bottle before stabbing him in the back of the neck as he lay on the ground.
Court Details the Attack
At Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Tim Gittins described the attack as 'sickening.' He stated: 'You took it upon yourself to arm yourself with a broken piece of glass from a bottle, threatening him with it, stabbing him with it as you faced each other. Then, sickeningly, when he went to the ground, forcing that broken bottle into his neck at the rear as he lay prone on the ground.' The judge noted it was a 'miracle' that the victim's injuries were limited to a laceration on his cheek, a relatively shallow wound on the back of his neck, and two puncture wounds to his left abdomen.
Victim Declines to Cooperate
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment but declined to provide a statement to police. The case came to light after a video of the attack circulated on social media. Prosecutor Saba Shah told the court: 'That showed the defendant repeatedly slashing at the victim with a broken glass bottle. He is heard shouting "I'm going to stab you in the neck" as the victim lay on the ground.'
Defendant's Criminal History
Olvhoj, who has 60 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possessing an offensive weapon. He also admitted ten unrelated offences of possessing an offensive weapon, two commercial burglaries, and seven shop thefts. The court heard that Olvhoj, of no fixed abode, has a history of drug and alcohol misuse and expressed remorse for his actions. Defence lawyer Laura Miller said he hopes to move away from the area upon release to break the cycle of drug abuse and offending. The court also heard that Olvhoj has spent significant periods in custody and that his traumatic childhood, along with mental health issues including PTSD, contributed to his offending.
Sentencing and Aftermath
Judge Gittins sentenced Olvhoj to a total of five years in prison, reflecting the severity of the attack and his extensive criminal record. The judge added that the victim was likely 'left terrified by an attack that persisted for some time.'
