Killer's sentence doubled after police find £9,680 of cocaine in his kitchen
Sentence doubled after cocaine found in killer's home

A man serving time for killing a football fan in a brutal one-punch attack has had his prison sentence doubled after police discovered a significant quantity of cocaine in his home.

The Fatal Assault and Initial Sentence

Steven Vonk, 51, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Timmy Matthews following an unprovoked assault. The court heard that Vonk punched Mr Matthews to the ground, leaving him unconscious. The victim sustained catastrophic brain injuries from which he died.

For this offence, Vonk was initially sentenced to three years in prison at Swansea Crown Court, a term he was already serving.

The Drug Discovery During Arrest

The day after the fatal assault, officers went to Vonk's flat to arrest him. During their visit, they made a startling discovery in his kitchen.

In a cupboard, police found a freezer bag containing 121 grams of high-purity cocaine. Prosecutors stated the drugs had an estimated street value of up to £9,680. Envelopes holding more than £900 in cash were also seized from the property.

Increased Sentence for Drug Offence

Vonk was subsequently charged with possession of cocaine with intent to supply, a charge he denied. However, the evidence presented at court was compelling.

As a result of this separate drug offence, his original three-year sentence was increased. The judge ruled that the sentences for manslaughter and the drug crime should run consecutively, effectively doubling his time behind bars.

The case highlights the severe legal consequences that follow not only acts of fatal violence but also involvement in the supply of Class A drugs.
