Russell Brand, who faces a lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of rape and sexual assault, wrote in his 2007 memoir that his father Ron paid a sex worker to take his virginity during a trip to Hong Kong when he was 17.
Brand, 51, was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday at London's Southwark Crown Court. The judge told him that "obviously a custodial sentence of some length will result," with sentencing scheduled for Monday.
Memoir details Hong Kong encounter
In his book, My Booky Wook, Brand recalled how his dad hired two sex workers for himself and one for Brand, who was just 17 at the time. Brand wrote that his dad began "unwrapping his two prostitutes" as Brand tried to have sex with the woman hired for him, but the "bedlam" coming from his dad's room was distracting.
Brand wrote, as per the Metro: "The episode that defined my relationship with women occurred in Hong Kong with my dad. I was 17. On day one we went to some sleazy dive. Before long I was sat on a bar stool with a Filipino called Mary-Lou. Then we were leaving in a cab with three Asian prostitutes my dad was drunkenly herding."
He added: "Back in the hotel, my dad set about unwrapping his two prostitutes. I sat on the edge of the other twin bed. She must have known I was a virgin as soon as the bungling encounter commenced."
Early sexualisation and father's reaction
Brand described his sexuality as having "morphed forever from bewildered innocence into something more complex and rapacious," adding that during the rest of that holiday he "f****d loads more prostitutes and never wore a condom." He also wrote that as his career as a comedian and TV presenter picked up, he began to have "loads of encounters after gigs" and found himself "engaged in an increasingly desperate quest to satisfy" his growing sexual appetite.
Elsewhere in the book, Brand discussed watching pornography at his father's house as an "infant," describing his dad's "reservoir of porn" as "an additional source of dangerous nourishment." He wrote: "I think I always had a premature awareness of sexuality, but Ron Brand's penchant for leaving me to occupy my infant mind with his cache of girlie magazines certainly did nothing to stem the erotic tide."
Brand described his relationship with his dad as "strange," noting that the only two interests they seemed to share were "football and women." Ron and Brand's mother split when he was six months old.
Following the verdicts, Ron Brand told the BBC he was "bemused and shocked," saying, "I just didn't expect this – it's wrong," and adding, "It's devastating."
