A serving police officer is to appear in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving 10 months after a 16-year-old boy was killed while riding an e-bike.
Daniel Cartwright, 31, was off duty at the time of the crash, at 10.10am on Sunday 28 September 2025, which involved two cars and an e-bike.
The bike rider, 16-year-old Ryley Hutson, was pronounced dead at the scene on Chilwell Lane in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire. The road was closed as emergency services dealt with the incident and eyewitnesses reported an air ambulance landing in the close to the crash.
Charges and court appearance
Now, in an update almost 10 months later, Nottinghamshire Police has said Mr Cartwright, who is a serving police officer with Bedfordshire Police, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Mr Cartwright of Kettering, Northamptonshire is expected to appear before magistrates in Nottingham on 6 August 2026.
Tributes to Ryley
In an online fundraiser via GoFundMe created in the days following the incident, Ryley's aunt described the 16-year-old as being "full of life, laughter, and love".
"Our world has been shattered by the heart-breaking loss of 16-year-old Ryley, who tragically passed away in a fatal motorcycle accident," she said. "Ryley was full of life, laughter, and love - a cheeky soul who left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him."
Investigation and inquest
At the time of the crash it was reported that a 30-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on police bail while investigations continued.
Detective Inspector Jamie Moore, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a tragic incident which has had a devastating impact on Ryley's family. They have been updated about this important step in our investigation, and our thoughts remain with them.”
An inquest was opened by coroner Amanda Bewley at Nottingham Coroner's Court on December 2 to look into the circumstances of Ryley's death. Coroner Amanda Bewley told the short hearing that a post-mortem examination has established chest injuries as a provisional cause of death.
