Parents' sentences increased for murder of baby son

A couple jailed for murdering their three-month-old son after he died in hospital with severe head injuries have had their "unduly lenient" sentences increased.

Klevi Pirjani, 38, and Nivalda Pirjani, 35, were jailed in April for a minimum of 19 years and 15 years over the killing of their son Miguel, whose injuries were inflicted during what a judge called a "callous" fatal assault.

The tot spent the first month of his life in hospital before returning home, where he was assaulted for the first time, suffering two fractured ribs. The abuse continued and escalated over the following weeks, with the infant suffering a series of blows to his head on November 24, 2024.

Fatal injuries and hospital death

Miguel was examined and found to have sustained a severe, irreversible brain injury and a number of fractures to his body, which were at various stages of healing. Paramedics had initially managed to restart his heart, but Miguel never regained consciousness and tragically died in Alder Hey children's hospital five days later.

The Attorney General, Ellie Reeves, referred the defendants' murder sentences to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme. Their minimum terms were today increased by two and a half years each to 17 years and 9 months and 21 years and 6 months respectively.

Court of Appeal ruling

Barristers for the government argued that the original sentences did not "meet the justice of this terrible case". Lord Justice Jeremy Baker, sitting with Mr Justice Goose and Mr Justice Hilliard, said baby Miguel was subjected to "routine" assaults which worsened over time and led to his "particularly callous" murder.

He said: "We take the view that the resulting sentences significantly underestimated the aggravating factors, to the extent that not only do we consider that the minimum terms were unduly lenient, but that we should set them aside."

Medical examinations found that Miguel had suffered 41 fractures in total, including injuries to his ribs, legs, arm, collarbone and spine, inflicted during repeated assaults over several weeks. The judge said it was not possible to determine which parent had inflicted the fatal injuries, but found that they had acted together and that whichever parent carried out the violence was encouraged by the other.

Sentencing remarks and reaction

Sentencing them in March, Mr Justice Andrew Baker told the court the couple were "in this together, encouraging each other" to beat their "defenceless" son. He said that who "fatally battered" the baby "remains the guilty secret of a warped relationship, in which you came first for each other to an unnatural degree".

The Attorney General, Ellie Reeves KC MP said: "Miguel Pirjani was a defenceless baby who had an entire life to live, yet he suffered appallingly cruel violence at the hands of the two people who should have protected him. This was a truly harrowing case, and my thoughts are with everyone who loved and cared for him. I welcome the Court of Appeal's decision to increase both minimum terms following my referral and remain committed to ensuring those who carry out the most serious crimes face the full force of the law."
