OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney has been jailed for stabbing her boyfriend to death in their Miami condo. Clenney, 30, was sentenced to six years for killing 27-year-old Christian Obumseli on April 3, 2022. But she got credit for time served since she was first taken into custody in August that year, meaning she could be free in just two years.
Plea deal and possible sentence
She could have faced up to 30 years on a manslaughter with a deadly weapon charge but struck a plea deal with prosecutors. Clenney’s relationship with Obumseli, which started a year earlier, was described in court documents as ‘extremely tempestuous and combative’. The couple were said to have been involved in ‘numerous domestic violence incidents’.
They moved into the Miami condo in January 2022. By the time of the killing, the complex had launched eviction proceedings after complaints from neighbours and security about their behaviour, Court TV reports.
Victim's family statement
Obumseli suffered a single stab wound to the chest, which Clenney claimed was inflicted when she threw a knife at him out of fear. In a statement read on her behalf, his mum said she found out about her death when medics phoned to ask if she would allow his eyes to be donated. She described it as the ‘darkest day of my life’, saying: ‘Since April 4, I have lived with fear, anxiety, sleepless nights, heartache and more tears than I can count.
‘There was a joy in my life and my family’s life that has never completely returned. ‘The loss of Christian did not end April 4; we carry it with us every day. ‘Christian, your legacy and your memory will remain with us. We miss you, we love you; may you continue to rest in peace, my son.’
Reaction from both families
The Obumseli family’s lawyer, Larry Handfield, told reporters after the hearing that the guilty plea had given them ‘closure’. He said: ‘I don’t think there’s anything that she could say that can change what happened. ‘I think that she should have, at least, apologized, but even her apology would not have removed what she did in April 2022. ‘The most important thing is that the family wanted someone to accept responsibility, and the family saw that today. ‘She is a convicted felon for the rest of her life.’
It seemed to be Clenney’s family who felt hard done by at the sentence. Her dad, Kim Clenney said afterwards: ‘There was no wrongdoing by my daughter, or my wife, or I. ‘In fact, one day in jail is one day too many.’
Financial implications
Clenney’s plea deal contains no provisions that would stop her profiting from her story in the future, according to Court TV. The ‘Son of Sam’ law – named after the infamous serial killer David Berkowitz – stipulate that any money earned off the back of offending should be directed to the victims’ families. Assistant State Attorney Shawn Abuhoff said in court his office planned to work with Florida’s attorney general to initiate financial proceedings if she chooses to do so.
